Soundproofing a metal roof (A complete guide)

Soundproofing a metal roof is not a hard job. You just have to make sure that the metal sheets are properly fixed on the ceiling. If it still makes the noise, you can use a good sound dampening insulator or a roof underlayment to fix the problem. With some tips and tricks, you can soundproof your metal roof even without spending any money!

A few days back, I got a chance to visit a friend who lives in an apartment with a metal roof! I decided to spend a few days with him, but… My God, the nights were terrible! I could hardly sleep while it was raining! That is why I decided to help him out and did some research on soundproofing a metal roof. Guess what? I was successful in reducing the noise almost completely! I have decided to share it all with you, so here it is!

This is all very simple, and you just have to follow the right steps for soundproofing your metal roof completely.

So let’s dive in and get started!

Soundproofing a metal roof: 5 easy ways

There are many ways for soundproofing a metal roof. You can choose any one of them according to your choice and budget, or even combine a few for the best results.

  1. Proper fixing with roof fasteners
  2. Insulation of the metal ceiling
  3. Using a roof underlayment
  4. Choosing the right roofing profile
  5. Using a good sound deadening paint

Let’s go through each one of them so that you can learn everything in detail.

Proper fixing with the roof fasteners

You need to follow the manufacturer’s guide for proper installation of the metal roof. If the metal roof is fixed with a few fasteners or the fasteners are in the wrong place and not firm enough, there are chances that the roof moves when it rains or hails.

Also, the metal roof sheets are usually light in weight, which is why they get damaged by strong wind and thunderstorms quite easily. The changes in temperature also have a great impact on these sheets, which seem to wear out after a certain period.

If any of this is the reason, you can check the roof fasteners and replace them to reduce the noise. Make sure that you use the metal-to-wood roof screws for your metal sheet installation. They have a hex head and a steel washer with a rubber end to hold the metal sheet in place. If there is any other fastener used, I would recommend you to replace them with these screws. You can purchase it here on Amazon. These screws are great for keeping the metal in place and also prevent water from getting inside which would be great for a rainy season.

Insulation of the metal ceiling for soundproofing a metal roof

The second method for soundproofing your metal roof is using the physical barriers or sound dampening insulators for reducing the noise coming from the ceiling. The idea behind this is simple. The thicker your roof covering would be, the lesser noise you will hear.

For the insulation of your metal roof, you can consider several options. The glass wool insulators are specially designed for metal roofs and can be a great help in this regard. They cover most of the area of the ceiling thereby reducing a lot of noise coming from the ceiling. My recommendation here would be Bradford’s Anticon, which is a pretty good glass wool insulator for soundproofing a metal ceiling.

While covering it for soundproofing, you might want to cover as much area as you can. A good option is to use foam gap filler at the end to finish off any leftover spots. Just remember that you have to be very careful while using it as this can be a real mess! I would recommend you to first try it on a piece of wood, leaving it for a few minutes to see how much it expands. Amazon sells it at a very good price. Here is the link for you.

The best solution I’ve seen so far comes from the spray foam insulation. A lot of professional companies do that at a very cheap rate. However, if you want to do it yourself, you can purchase the kits available in the market for this. I would recommend you to buy the Touch n Seal 200 Kit, which is great for soundproofing walls, floors, and ceilings. Of course, you can also purchase it here on Amazon.

The technique is simple. Just measure the area you have to cover, read the instruction given on the kit carefully, and you are good to go!

Using a roof underlayment for soundproofing a metal roof

If you are building a metal roof from scratch, this can be the best and the most effective method. However, if you want to use it for soundproofing an existing metal roof, the process might seem a bit tricky.

At the most basic level, I would recommend you to install a plywood or OSB on the roof before installing the metal sheet. It does not have to be really thick to work. A thin and cheaper option will also make a great difference in soundproofing it.

Apart from these, you can also use the foam insulating panels or nylon mats. Although these are normally used for the floor soundproofing, you can use them even in the ceiling to reduce the noise. My recommendation would be the Charcoal Soundproofing Foam Sheets by OBCO you can find here on Amazon,  They’re great for soundproofing the walls and ceilings.

Delta Trela Underlayment is another greater option! Here is a review of this if you are looking to purchase one for your metal roof.

If you want to go for this method, it’s better to call some professional to help you install the underlayment on your metal roof. If the underlayment is not installed properly, it won’t be of any help to soundproof the roof. Therefore, you have to be very careful while installing it. Choosing the right roofing profile for soundproofing a metal roof

You might be thinking what a right roofing profile means? Simply put, it means that you have to choose the right metal sheet with the right shape to reduce noise.

The shape of the roofing material greatly affects the amount of noise you hear from your ceiling. The flat surface seems to be more firm and therefore vibrates less. Less vibration means lesser noise. On the other hand, round-shaped roofing tends to produce more noise due to its structure and shape.

Also, you will notice the difference in the stiffness or hardness of different metal sheets. The more complex the roofing profile is, the stiffer the metal sheet would be, and the lesser noise it will make. Therefore, you must be careful in choosing the right roofing profile to avoid the maximum noise.

Additionally, you must be careful in choosing the roofing material of the right thickness. The thicker metal sheets tend to stay in place more and vibrate less. That is why they produce a lot less noise than the thin metal sheets. Also, the thicker metal sheets are even more durable, so once you get a good-quality sheet metal fixed on your roof, you can enjoy the benefits for a lot of coming years.

Anyway, no matter which roofing profile you choose, the metal roof always does produce noise. Therefore, it is better to combine this with any other good soundproofing method for the improved results.

Using a good sound deadening paint for soundproofing a metal roof

There are a few really good sound deadening paints available in the market that you can easily use for soundproofing your metal ceiling. I did a lot of research on this and here is what I found.

This Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sound Deadening Coating you can find here on Amazon is a great option for applying on your metal roof. The best part is that it is very easy to apply and also, it is completely environment friendly.

The liquid rubber is totally safe to use even for soundproofing an indoor project. Another good thing about this paint is that you do not need to have a breathing apparatus for this. All you have to do is to purchase one from Amazon and apply its heavy coats on the roof using any good brush, roller or piston sprayer. Simple and easy! Here a step-by-step guide of how you can do it by yourself at home:

  1. Apply a thick coat of the sound deadening paint.
  2. Let it dry for 20 minutes.
  3. Repeat the process twice.
  4. After you have applied the third layer of paint, let it dry completely… and you are done with soundproofing your metal roof!

Some other great tips that might help you out when soundproofing a metal roof

A metal roof is one of the most easy-to-install, cheap, and durable roofing styles you can ever have in your home! If you just combine it with a good soundproofing option, you can enjoy a noise-free and peaceful set up at a very affordable price. Here a few tips and tricks that you must keep in mind while soundproofing a metal roof so that you can enjoy the maximum benefits out of it.

  1. If you are installing a new metal roof, check its thickness carefully. The thin metal sheets vibrate easily and produce more sound, whereas the thicker ones are strong and therefore, produce much lesser noise.
  2. Fix the metal sheets properly with a sufficient amount of fasteners after a certain gap or as written in the manual.
  3. Metal sheets make a lot of noise when the edges rub together. You can reduce this noise greatly by applying a good sealant at the area where the two panels or sheets join. This will prevent them from rubbing together, and so there will be no noise.
  4. Bring the soundproof panels on the roof and cut them right there. This will reduce a lot of work of going up and down the ladder to bring the tools, and make the measurements. Just cut the panels on the roof for better and quicker results.
  5. Fix the insulation panel on a paper liner.  A paper liner is important because it stops water to get into the space between the soundproof sheet and the metal roof. This makes sure that the place remains dry and molds don’t grow in there.
  6. If you want to cover the inside of the roof as well for better results, use a foam batting that you can learn how to do it by yourself here. It is different from the normal roll-up insulation sheets available in the market. It is flat and that is why you can easily install it on the inside surface of the metal roof for even better results.
  7. Also, it is important to buy a metal roofing from a good and well-regarded roofing company. Go through the customer reviews before buying one for your home. As this is a very obvious problem, if the sheet of a certain company produces too much noise, people must be discussing it in their reviews.
  8. Whichever method you choose, make sure you leave no gaps and fill them with a sealant. If any gaps remain in the ceiling, you will not enjoy the maximum benefit out of your soundproofing technique.
  9. You can grow plants on the metal roof. That would soundproof it, with an additional benefit of keeping your rooftop cool for summers. Also, growing plants is an amazing thing and I think you must go for it!

Some common soundproofing mistakes and how you can fix them

A soundproof metal roof
This happened due to strong wind because the construction company didn´t fix the soundproofing sheet properly.

Here are some common mistakes that I and a few of my friends learned a hard way and so, I do not want you to through it all (like us). Just make sure these don’t happen and you are all set to sleep well, even if it’s raining outside!

Soundproofing panel not installed properly:

If you have not fixed the soundproof panel properly on the metal roof, there are good chances that it gets worn out by the strong wind or rain. This would be a total waste of time and money, and you don’t want that, right? In order to prevent this, my recommendation would be to talk to a professional about which adhesive would be the best for covering the metal ceiling. They are experienced and so, they would know best about the right adhesive to apply on the metal top.

Not cutting the right size panel and leaving gaps in-between:

I have been repeatedly saying this just to you to make sure that you be careful about it. Even the smallest gaps must be covered with a foam gap filler. If any gap remains, it will let water enter and can lead to the growth of molds and fungus. That would be really bad, not only for the ceiling but also or your health and hygiene. So, you must take care of that.

Choosing a cheaper option, just to save a few bucks:

Just remember that metal roofs are so durable that they can last even up to 50 years. Therefore, a smart investment would be to choose a good soundproofing option to make good use of money for a longer run. Never compromise on a thin soundproofing sheet, instead of a thicker one, just to save a few bucks. Consider this as long time investment and therefore, choose wisely.

Not combining it with soundproofing the metal doors and windows:

Soundproofing the metal roof would be good, but you will not be able to enjoy the complete silence until you combine it with the soundproof doors and windows. Just like the rooftop, a lot of noise comes from the doors and windows, especially if there is heavy rain, wind or thunderstorm. Soundproofing windows and doors are also not that hard, and I have covered it for you in my other articles.
